Job Title: Research Assistant

Reports to: House and Collections Manager

Hours: 37.5 hrs per week

Contract type: One year

Salary: c. £19,000

Job Purpose:

To work closely with our House and Collections Manager and senior management team with preparing Farringford, the Grade 1 listed home of Poet Laureate Alfred, Lord Tennyson, for public opening as a historic house and museum.

Main Duties and Activities:

  • To undertake research into the Tennyson family and household and to upload all relevant information and supporting images to the website.
  • To write and manage blogs for the website
  • To research content for the audio guide, guide book and guided tours.
  • To set up and organize the presentation of a small opening exhibition
  • To catalogue and research the objects in the house
  • To provide practical assistance to a small, friendly and dedicated team with the preparation of the house for opening Spring 2017.

Skills & Experience:

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Good IT skills including PowerPoint
  • Confidence at public speaking
  • Excellent research skills
  • Ability to work to deadlines
  • The ability to work as a team member

Qualifications:

    • BA (Hons) Victorian Studies, History, English literature, Philosophy
    • MA Museum Studies

Knowledge and Interests:

      • Historic buildings, Museum Collections, Alfred, Lord Tennyson, Victorian Culture and Social History

Personal Attributes:

        • Strong organization and planning skills
        • The ability to work unsupervised
        • Friendly and flexible
        • The ability to maintain confidentiality
        • Good interpersonal skills
