We loved our visit. The guides were really knowledgeable and passionate about their work. They were also great storytellers that brought the poets' story to life. Though I'm personally not a fan of audio guides (I read much faster), I was glad that most of the information was also to be found in leaflets in the rooms. The interior was absolutely stunning, especially all the replications of the wallpaper, curtains and rugs.

Farringford Gardens

Half a League onwards!

We stayed in one of the lets on the Farringford Estate, in the old stable block. The let was well appointed, with all that we would need for our stay. It was the home of the Poet Laureate, Alfred Lord Tennyson, and I had a family connection as one of my great uncles worked on the estate, eventually becoming the chauffeur.

Do visit, it's a lovely place to stay and you have the Isle of Wight as your playground!

Our second visit

Our second visit to the gardens, this time taking friends and four dogs. The walled garden is a lovely start. The grounds look immaculate but unfortunately it was too hot for us to do the full walk again this year. We've not been able to see inside the house and do the tour because we have the dogs with us but maybe next time we're over. The lady on the gate was lovely and my friend had a chat with the original gardener/groundsman, also very nice. No tearoom which is unusual nowadays. Plenty of parking.

Wonderful restoration

We had a really enjoyable time today visiting the house despite the dreadful weather. The house has been wonderfully restored with great attention to detail. The staff were welcoming and knowledgeable. Thoroughly recommend a visit.

Lovely to visit

It hasn't been open long so looks fresh and new. A lot of work has gone into making the house interesting to visitors and explaining the history. The gardens are beautiful, well laid out and cared for, obviously a labour of love. It's at one end of the island but well worth the drive wherever you are staying.

The house was closed on the day we went - as was the road - but that's another story. The garden and the exhibition telling the story of the restoration are well worth the visit. Very good welcome at the gate, and the walk up through the garden was an absolute pleasure. Hard to imagine that just a few short years ago this area was occupied only by holiday bungalows.

We were delighted that long-lost features of Tennyson's garden have been restored. The fragments of his poetry scattered around the grounds are a reminder of the very special history of this place. The exhibition - well illustrated with documents and photos - brings the house to life. This has clearly been a labour of love for the new owners, who deserve full credit for all they have done in this remarkable project.
